Chemical Balancing Philosophy: Why We Use the LSI Method with Orenda Principles

Most pool companies “balance chemicals.” At Reflections Pool Services, we balance water — and there’s a big difference.

After completing two Orenda Academy certifications, our team has adopted a water‑chemistry philosophy rooted in LSI (Langelier Saturation Index) science, not guesswork. This approach protects your plaster, prevents scale and etching, stabilizes chlorine efficiency, and keeps your water clear and comfortable year‑round.

This isn’t the old-school “pH, chlorine, and hope for the best” method. This is modern, science‑driven pool care!

What Is the LSI — and Why Does It Matter?

The Langelier Saturation Index is a calculation that determines whether your water is:

  • Balanced (neither corrosive nor scale-forming)

  • Aggressive (etching plaster, dissolving calcium, damaging surfaces)

  • Scale-forming (depositing calcium on tile, heaters, salt cells, and plaster)

LSI considers six factors:

  • pH

  • Total alkalinity

  • Calcium hardness

  • Water temperature (this is very important!)

  • Total dissolved solids (TDS)

  • CYA (indirectly, through its effect on pH and alkalinity)

When these factors are in harmony, your water is stable, predictable, and gentle on your pool.

When they’re not, your pool becomes a chemistry roller coaster.

Why We Use the Orenda Approach…

Orenda’s education focuses on water balance, not chemical sales. Their philosophy aligns perfectly with ours:

  • Prevent problems instead of reacting to them

  • Use fewer chemicals, but use them correctly

  • Maintain water that protects surfaces and equipment

  • Respect the natural behavior of calcium and pH

This is why we’ve integrated Orenda’s LSI‑based system into our weekly service model.

Our Chemical Balancing Philosophy (In Plain English)

1. We Don’t Fight pH — We Manage It

pH naturally rises in pools, especially in the Inland Empire where:

  • High UV exposure burns off CO₂

  • Aeration from spillways and returns increases pH

  • High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions

Instead of constantly forcing pH down with acid, we stabilize the water’s LSI so pH rises more slowly and predictably.

2. We Maintain Calcium — We Don’t Fear It

Many pool companies treat calcium like the enemy. But calcium is essential for protecting plaster.

In our region, fill water is already hard — but that doesn’t mean your pool has the right calcium level. We adjust calcium intentionally to keep your LSI balanced, especially in winter when cold water becomes more aggressive.

3. We Use Chlorine More Efficiently

Balanced water means chlorine doesn’t have to work overtime.

When LSI is stable:

  • Chlorine lasts longer

  • You need less of it

  • Swimmers experience fewer irritations

  • Water stays clearer with fewer fluctuations

This is the opposite of the “dump and pray” method used by many techs.

4. We Protect Your Plaster Investment

LSI-balanced water prevents:

  • Etching

  • Pitting

  • Calcium dusting

  • Premature surface aging

  • Rough, sandpaper-like texture

Your plaster should last 10–15 years. LSI management helps it get there.

5. We Reduce Scale and Equipment Damage

Scale is not a chlorine problem — it’s an LSI problem.

By keeping water balanced, we prevent:

  • Heater scale

  • Salt cell buildup

  • Tile line crust

  • Cloudy water from calcium fallout

This saves homeowners hundreds to thousands in repairs.

Why This Matters for Inland Empire Pools

Upland, Claremont, and La Verne have unique water challenges:

  • Hard fill water

  • High UV intensity

  • Extreme summer temperatures

  • Rapid evaporation

  • Dust load from winds

These factors make traditional “range chemistry” unreliable. LSI‑based water management is not optional here — it’s essential!

What Homeowners Can Expect from Our LSI‑Driven Service

When Reflections Pool Services manages your water:

  • Your plaster lasts longer

  • Your equipment runs more efficiently

  • Your water stays clearer and more stable

  • You use fewer chemicals overall

  • You avoid costly scale and corrosion issues

  • Your pool feels better on your skin and eyes

This is professional-grade water management, not pool-store chemistry.

The Bottom Line
